A recent study of the cost of generic medications in the US has revealed that the cost of medicines that are available over the counter (OTC) is significantly lower than the retail price. The US health care system has spent $7.9 billion on prescription drugs over the past 20 years, and this represents a 5 per cent increase in the number of prescriptions.
It is the result of a combination of two factors: the increased use of prescription drugs and the growing preference of consumers for cheaper and less costly over-the-counter drugs.
The study was conducted by the Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (IHCE), which has the responsibility of overseeing the cost of medicines in the US.
“The results are striking: Generic medications (OTC) are more expensive than the retail price of the same strength,” said Dr. David R. Akerlof, senior director at the Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. “It is the result of a combination of two factors: the increased use of prescription drugs and the growing preference of consumers for cheaper and less costly over-the-counter drugs.”
According to Dr. Akerlof, the study is an important contribution in light of the growing market for prescription drugs in the US and the increasing demand for medicines.
“The result is a substantial increase in the number of prescriptions and retail prices for generic medications, which have increased the overall costs of prescription drugs,” he said.
The US health system has spent $7.9 billion on prescription drugs over the past 20 years, with $5.9 billion of that expenditure spent on OTC medications.
The increased use of prescription drugs, as well as the growing preference for cheaper and less expensive over-the-counter drugs, was a major contributing factor.
“In the United States, the number of prescriptions increased by 5 per cent in the second half of 2015, a time when most people were buying over-the-counter medications for convenience,” Rydberg said.
“But it was only one factor that helped to prevent this,” he said. “The other was the growing preference for cheaper and less expensive over-the-counter medications.”
The US health care system spends more on prescription drugs than any other organisation in the world, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The US health system spent $7.9 billion on prescription drugs in 2015, and $6.3 billion of this expenditure spent on OTC medications.
Akerlof estimated that the average cost of all prescription drugs, including OTC drugs, in the US was $9,900 per month, compared with $8,750 per month for the total US population.
“This study was conducted to find out if the generic price of medicines could be lowered in the US by a factor of 2,” he said.
“We know that the brand-name drug Viagra, which is sold in the US, is very expensive to the government, and that’s why we have a price control program for the generics.”
Akerlof said that the increased use of prescription drugs, particularly generics, is a result of the increasing demand for medicines in the US and the growing preference for cheaper and less expensive over-the-counter drugs.
“The price-control program for generic drugs has resulted in the price being raised by more than twice as much as that for the brand-name drug,” he said.
“We know that the brand-name drug is a very expensive medication in the US, and that’s why we have a price control program for the generics.”
John V. D’Alessandro, a professor of pharmacy at the University of Florida, “Generic medications are often prescribed for a wide range of conditions, and their costs are more important than their brand-name counterparts.”
“Generic medications are available in the pharmacy without a prescription and have been for decades,” he said.
“Unfortunately, they are also often overpriced and the cost of these medications is much higher than the brand-name drug.”
Akerlof said that the cost of prescription drugs was a significant factor in the rising trend of the costs of medicines.
